"CAUSE"play Workshop with Arvee | Kerty | Ranrick Season 1 [Cosplay Tutorials]

So last Saturday (December 11,2010) was the FIRST EVER in CEBU "CAUSEplay" workshop.  There were about 20 people at the venue i believe.  It was just plain boring at home 4 weeks ago before i was informed of this so i emptied the slot Just to attend this!  This was a beneficiary workshop for the betterment of the cosplay community in Cebu but hey! We wouldn't mind helping people online right?! :D

With those in mind, i hope you get the picture. -.-  It was a looong day and let me start out by introducing our mentors of that day LOL.  Yes, they're one of the best people in the props making field and it was an honor and privilege to be under their Tender Love Care . LOL

MENTOR # 1 : Master Arvee Yap a.k.a Onigiri Wasabi

Our very own ARMOR SPECIALIST in my honest opinion XD

Arvee Yap is also known as Onigiri Wasabi.  He's one of the cosplay pioneers of Cebu Cosplaying and as of the moment, he is also one of the friendliest people in the awesome cosplay world of Cebu.  AS OF THE MOMENT LOL.  Just beep him up a question and he'd answer you without hesitation, but give stupid questions.. Hmmmm. I wonder. XD

MENTOR # 2 : Kerty Tabaña a.k.a. Kerty? XD

One of our very own Katana specialist  - enough said =D

Hmm, Kerty Kerty Kerty... yes, Kerty. LOL. He makes one of the best katana's in cebu and other types of swords.  He is also one of those people who'd support crossdressing i believe XD if i am not mistaken. am i ?  if i am im sorry XD.  He is really awesome too.  He ain't hesitant to help you out especially if you need help. Haven't spent much time to get to know him but he's an awesome person =D

MENTOR # 3 : Ranrick Matsuyama a.k.a. Nameless REN

And yes, Ranrick.  Who is better known as NAMELESS REN.  That cosplayer with different wigs that wears a final fantasy inspired (i believe) wardrobe with unmistakenly GINORMOUS boobs. -.-  He makes one of the most unmistakenly C$N*( +@#M($+_!@( Props i've seen. If it's big, Abnormal, and UNSTANDARD, please call him =.=,  He's an awesome person too, along with his girlfriend Kyn who i see almost all the time in ayala =.=  If you have cosplay problems, you can talk to them and they'd help you out XD

So here we were, listening to them.. The whole 3-4 hours.. Without talking.. not breathing..

The guys talk about the following:

NUMBER 1 : MATERIALS

As per discussed in my previous blog posts, they talked about what kinds of materials you'd basically need when "propsmithing".  PROGRESS in Downtown serves as the MOTHER of all Materials XD you'd practically find EVERYTHING there.. If not, go across to LA FAMILIA HOUSE, if not, STOP COSPLAY. LOL XD As the talk progressed, they gave really handy tips which i will never forget.

1. ADHESIVES

2. PAINT

This was their golden rule.  Come to think about it, we wouldn't want to wear an armor or prop that would break on you on a cosplay event right?  So does with paint.  EVEN if you have an AWESOME BODY FRAME of your armor/weapon, If paint sucks, THINGS DIE.  MISERABLY.  

With adhesives, it's self explanatory that with the proper adhesives, it also determines how well you can pull off your cosplay xD.  And for the paint, NEVER EVER use LATEX unless it's okay.  LATEX tends to crack in the future and when armor is stretched when you wear it, things go UGLY.  UGLY i say. =.=  One BEST property would be by using that air brush thingy but IT WOULD BE FUGLY EXPENSIVE.  but like every other hobby, IT IS AN INVESTMENT.  But if you're planning to use your armor/weapon for just 3-4 times, then go with paint brush! 

REMEMBER: NOTHING LASTS FOREVER

Therefore, If you want an armor for a loooooooooooooooooong span use, use the best materials possible and preferably spraypain/air brush paint :D

Now, what do we use for our armor? WE USE CRAFT FOAM/AIR FOAM/IDONTKNOWFOAM and SINTRA or FIBERGLASSING XD.  But since we cannot do FIBERGLASSING due to DANGEROUS i dunno but it is XD we stick to sintra or air foam for the reason that it is manipulated to any extend of your mind's desires XD  Paper art folding would help :D.  

For the Sword, SELF EXPLANATORY WOOD WILL DO =.= Just cut em right =.=

NUMBER 2 : HANDS ON! 

since i cannot help you with that part, doing a project by yourself with the things i've learned as for basics would help you.  I've learned that you can cut wood with the use of CUTTER only and that PROPORTIONS does not at all times matter for the fact that ANIME bends the Laws of Physics XD.  LEARN the basics of the ART OF PAPER FOLDING. it comes in handy when you touch air foams =.=  And as for the guns, Combination of hybrid materials come in handy.  IT CAN BE COVERED WITH THE PAINT  YOU USE eventually. USE ENAMEL! and PLEASE don't use thinner if you don't do Air brush :D Just put multiple coats to make it have the shine you want :D AND NEVER BUFF your armors if you use the metallic pain thingy, It takes the paint away to SILVER faster than you think.

I HOPE THIS HELPED YOU AND MIND YOU PART 2 IS OPEN NEXT YEAR.  IT IS FOR THE BASICS AND ADVANCED(for the people who attended BASICS).  I have learned a lot and not all are explainable through this site only.  If you wish to have hands on, stick around for posts for PART 2.

I have learned a lot from this experience.  Even though there were ups and downs, the event was a success. I just hope people take this seriously the next time around.  It comes only once in a bluemoon that AWESOME COSPLAYERS go down from their PEDESTALS to teach US the not so good cosplayers =.= I really hope this is a learning experience for everyone.  Opportunities comes, it is us that does not usually do our part.
